KU’s Gagnet Playing in UEFA U19 Championship

LLANELLI, Wales – Kansas soccer’s incoming freshman Aurélie Gagnet competed in her first match as part of her native France’s U19 national team in the UEFA U19 Championship Monday. Gagnet, who signed to play for the Jayhawks this summer, helped the French play to a 0-0 draw against England in the first match of semifinal group play.

The Montpellier, France native started Monday’s match and played all 90 minutes as her team’s right wing defender. Gagnet’s defense in part led to little threat from the English offense, who only amassed three shots on the day, versus France’s 11. The two teams’ draw means each gains one point through the first of three matches in group play. The top two nations from each of the four-team groups will then advance to the tournament semifinals, set to begin on Aug. 28.

Gagnet also helped her team qualify for this week’s tournament by participating in the qualifying rounds earlier this spring. She aided France in allowing only one opponent goal in three international matches and even scored a goal in France’s 3-0 victory over Switzerland in April.

Gagnet will join her team for the second match of group play on Thursday at 2 p.m. (CT) when her team takes on group leader Denmark. The French are then slated to take on host team Wales on Sunday, Aug. 25 for the final match of group play. Fans can follow live stats from both games here.
