Seventeen Jayhawks Selected to Academic All-Big 12 Teams
IRVING, Texas – The Kansas men’s and women’s cross country teams had 17 individuals selected to the Academic All-Big 12 teams, the Big 12 Conference announced on Thursday, with the Kansas men leading the way among men’s teams with 10 selections.
Representing KU on the Academic All-Big 12 men’s teams, Ben Butler, Ryan Butler, Chase Dornbusch, Gavin Glaza, George Letner, John Luder, Michael Melgares and Jake Ralston earned first-team honors, while Marcus Quere and Jack Young were selected with second-team All-Big 12 honors.
The women’s team was highlighted by seven first-team selections, with Alexys Barton, Riley Cooney, Cameron Gueldner, Avryl Johnson, Lisa Lauschke, Catherine Liggett and Ally Ryan being named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
Letner, Ben Butler and Lauschke were three of 22 individuals who were nominated with a 4.0 GPA, with Letner and Lauschke each making their third appearance on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team with a 4.0 GPA.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
Kansas will compete in the 2019 Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Cottonwood Creek Golf Club in Waco, Texas. Racing begins at 10 a.m., with the men’s 8,000-meter race, followed by the women’s 6,000-meter race at 11 a.m. The 2019 Big 12 Cross Country Championship will stream live on ESPN+ here.
