LAWRENCE, Kan. – The No. 25-ranked Kansas women’s basketball team opened their final exhibition game in mid-season form on Sunday afternoon as the Jayhawks got out to a 14-4 lead in the first four minutes of the game on the way to downing Fort Hays State 88-43. The Kansas lead did not dip below 10 points after the opening minutes and Kansas finished the first half shooting 60.6 percent from the field. The Jayhawks finish the exhibition season with a 2-0 record.

A 15-0 Kansas run in the first half was highlighted by a no look pass from All-American senior Angel Goodrich to junior Tania Jackson. The Tigers went 6:48 without a field goal during the run. The run swelled the Jayhawks lead to 33-8 at the 7:24 mark of the first half. Kansas extended their lead to 49-22 at halftime. Nine Jayhawks scored in the half led by Goodrich who put up 15. KU dominated down low as the Jayhawks scored 36 points in the paint in the half.

The first half performance was in stark contrast to the Jayhawks first exhibition game versus Washburn where Kansas scored 57 points in the game and shot 35.2 percent from the field.

The hot Jayhawk shooting continued to start the second half as KU shot 71.4 percent over the first six minutes of the half. The Jayhawks went on a 14-4 run over that span and extended their lead to 63-26. The Jayhawks were sparked to open the half by senior Carolyn Davis who scored five of the Jayhawks first seven points. Kansas followed the opening run with a 10-2 run over a three-and-a-half minute span in the middle of the half. Freshman Lamaria Cole scored six consecutive Jayhawk points to end the run. The KU lead grew to 43 points at the 10:53 mark as the Jayhawks led by a score of 73-30.

The KU shooting cooled as the Jayhawks were just 3-for-10 from the field over the final 7:44. Ten out of the 11 Jayhawks to see action scored with four in double figures led by 19 from Goodrich who was 9-for-12 from the field. The KU defense held Fort Hays to just 30.5 percent shooting for the game. KU forced 15 turnovers and grabbed 26 rebounds on the defensive end.

Kansas opens the regular season against Idaho State on Sunday, Nov. 11 at Allen Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
