Jayhawks Place 37 on Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kaley Smith led a group of 37 Kansas freshmen student-athletes who were named to the inaugural Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team as a total of 383 Big 12, first-year student-athletes were honored by the league office Thursday afternoon.
Smith, a member of the KU soccer team from Albuquerque, N.M., was one of 22 Big 12 student-athletes nominated with a 4.00 grade-point average (GPA). KU’s rowing team (11) edged the track and field program (10) for the most honorees in the department.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the 2012-13 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team’s scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
