New security measures in place for football season

LAWRENCE, Kan. – In an ongoing effort to increase the safety and security of all patrons and participants on campus for Kansas football games this season, in addition to the department-wide clear-bag policy, walk-through metal detectors will be utilized at all entry points into Memorial Stadium.
The security enhancements and policies put in place by Kansas Athletics have been the standard at professional sports and are becoming as such at the collegiate level. These new protocols will start with the season-opening game against Southeast Missouri State on Saturday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:06 p.m. Kansas Athletics will also be rolling out these measures at Allen Fieldhouse prior to the start of the 2017-18 men’s basketball season.
Due to the new security efforts at Memorial Stadium, Kansas Athletics encourages all fans to enter the facility as early as possible. Gates for students and suite holders open two hours prior to kickoff, while the general public may enter the stadium one and a half hours prior.
To help in this process, Kansas Athletics has renumbered and increased the number of gate access points. There are also express entry points at all public entrances and a traffic-flow concourse has been created at the south end of Memorial Stadium. Please refer to this map for all gate information.
Ticketed guests will not be the only individuals using this entry process, as all Kansas Athletics gameday staff will also be screened prior to access to the stadium. For guests who can’t use a walk-through metal detector, hand-held metal detectors will be used or a light physical pat-down as a final alternative option. Any person who does not consent to screening will be denied stadium entry.

Before passing through metal detectors, guests will be asked to remove cell phones, key rings, cameras, wallets, coins and any large metal objects from their pockets and place them in a provided container for inspection. Guests do not need to remove jackets, belts, watches, jewelry or shoes.
With the added security measures at Memorial Stadium, wrought-iron fencing was added to control the entry points and flow of fans entering the stadium. Fans looking to access The Hill from the west will now need to do so around the south end of the Anderson Family Football Complex.
