Kansas Adds Doubleheader with South Dakota State

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas softball has added two games to its spring slate and will play a doubleheader against South Dakota State on March 11 starting at 1 p.m., head coach Megan Smith announced Tuesday afternoon.

In addition to their opponents, the Jayhawks have battled weather throughout the opening month of the season, including moving south with an entire tournament field for last weekend’s Coach B Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. The added games against South Dakota State will offset a pair of dates lost to poor weather conditions (LIU Brooklyn and Fordham), and help bring a more balanced home/away docket. With the two extra games, KU will play a total of 15 games in its final season inside Arrocha Ballpark, before moving to a new facility at Rock Chalk Park next year.

The doubleheader against the Jackrabbitts will now serve as the Jayhawks’ home opener, and provide a tune-up for the original 2014 home premiere, the Jayhawk Invitational (March 14-16). The Jayhawk Invitational features games against Northern Illinois, Jackson State and No. 16 Nebraska. The fan giveaway for the home opener against South Dakota State includes the 2014 team poster and schedule magnet. For further schedule updates and information, visit KUAthletics.com.

Kansas is 11-6 after four tournaments and will continue the season-opening, road-game streak at the Under Armour Classic hosted by the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla., this weekend. Kansas will open the tournament with Northwestern at 10:45 a.m. (CT) Friday, and is scheduled to play five total games against a field that includes USF, St. John’s, Utah and LIU Brooklyn.
