Jayhawks’ Fall Schedule Announced

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas softball team continues preparation for the upcoming season with a fall lineup that includes the annual KU Fall Invitational, three home games and a contest at Iowa.

“We are really excited about our fall schedule,” said head coach Megan Smith. “We have so many new faces, so it will be great to see them out on the field together competing against another team for the first time. This year we are doing something different. We are traveling to Iowa to play, who had a great season last year. It’ll be good for us to be tested a little bit this fall and see how the younger players respond to that.”

The Jayhawks kick off their fall slate with the KU Fall Invitational Sept. 28-29 at Arrocha Park. The tournament features games against UMKC, Butler County Community College, Washburn, Cowley Community College and Labette County Community College.

“We have always hosted a great two-day tournament,” Smith said. “We also host a family day, which gives parents a chance to meet each other and see the team play for the first time.”

In October, KU hosts Baker (Oct. 9), Avila (Oct. 10) and Highland Community College (Oct. 20) before the Jayhawks will get tested on the road this fall, when they travel to the University of Iowa on Oct. 12.

The fall schedule allows the Jayhawks to gain valuable experience in a live-game setting. It also gives Smith and her staff a chance to see how the team is progressing. For several of the Jayhawks, it is the first time in a Kansas uniform and competing with their new teammates.

KU returns 12 letterwinners from last year’s record-breaking squad and welcomes seven newcomers to the 2014 roster. Among the Jayhawks returning this season are sophomores Kelsey Kessler and Chaley Brickley, who earned 2013 second-team All-Big 12 honors.
