Kansas Defense Steals Show in Win

LAWRENCE, Kan. –
Four Kansas players scored in double figures as the top-ranked Jayhawks easily defeated Alcorn State, 98-31, in Allen Fieldhouse Wednesday evening. KU recorded a season-high 21 steals and forced 30 ASU miscues en route to outscoring the Braves 35-11 in points off turnovers.
The win improved Kansas to 6-0 on the season and extended the nation’s longest home court winning streak to 46 games. The loss dropped ASU to 0-10 in 2009-10.
After Alcorn State opened the game with a 4-0 lead behind two baskets by JaMarkus Holt, Kansas quickly turned the tide scoring 36-straight points over the next 11 minutes and never looked back. The 36 points in row scored by the Jayhawks were one point shy of the NCAA record. Utah State scored 37-straight in a win over Idaho on Feb. 15, 2006.
KU freshman Xavier Henry led the way with 10 points, while fellow freshman Thomas Robinson had six points during the run. Kansas forced nine ASU turnovers and held the Braves to just 15 percent shooting from the field during the impressive run.
Kansas went on to close out the half with a 53-12 advantage as senior Sherron Collins and Henry each turned in 10 points in the opening frame. The 12 points marked the fewest points allowed in the first half since KU held Northern Arizona to just 10 points on Nov. 21, 2007.
The second half was more of the same as Collins and Henry each finished the game with 18 points, Robinson had 15 and senior Cole Aldrich tallied 13 points.
For the game, Kansas shot 47 percent, knocking down 35-of-74 shots. Collins and Henry each buried five three-point baskets as the Jayhawks made 11-of-34 from beyond the arc. In addition, KU connected on 17-of-33 shots from the charity stripe.
Kansas held Alcorn State to just 23 percent from the field and limited the Braves to just 1-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc and 6-of-15 from the foul line.
Aldrich led Kansas on the boards with a season-high 16 rebounds to go along with his 13 points, marking his third double-double of the season and 25th of his career. Robinson added 10 boards as KU pulled down 61 caroms compared to ASU’s 31. Robinson’s 10 boards paired up with his 15 points gave him his second double-double of the year.
Jayhawk freshman Elijah Johnson dished a personal best nine assists, the most for a Kansas player this season and sophomore Tyshawn Taylor had five as KU collected 28 dimes.
Kansas will hit the road for a game at UCLA in its next outing. The Jayhawks and Bruins will tip-off at 4:30 p.m., in Pauley Pavilion on Sunday, Dec. 6. The game will be broadcast live on FoxSportsNet.
