KU Defeats Western Illinois, 86-57

All 13 Jayhawks scored to help lead the University of Kansas to an 86-57 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday night at Allen Fieldhouse. With the victory KU improves its record to 3-3 on the season.

Jeff Hawkins’ alley-oop to C.J. Giles on the first possession of the game gave the Jayhawks a 2-0 lead they wouldn’t relinquish. KU shot 57 percent in the first half and took a 16-point lead into the locker room. Senior Christian Moody came off the bench to lead a balanced offensive attack in the first stanza with eight points on 4-of-4 shooting.

The Jayhawks used a 10-0 run early in the second half to pull away from the Leathernecks. Freshman Julian Wright scored seven of his game-high 14 points in the second half. The Chicago, Ill., native added four blocks and five assists.

Five Jayhawks scored double-digits with sophomores Sasha Kaun and C.J. Giles each scoring 10. Freshman Micah Downs added 10 as well. Moody finished the game with 12 points to set a new career-high.

KU out-scored WIU 42-14 in the paint and converted 22 Western Illinois turnovers into 28 points. Kansas had 25 assists on 29 field goals during the game.

The Jayhawks will head to Madison Square Garden to face St. Joseph’s in the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday, Dec. 6. Opening tip is set for 6 p.m. and can be seen nationally on ESPN.
