Behind a career high 23 points from sophomore Julian Wright, No. 9 Kansas defeated Rhode Island, 80-69, Saturday night at Allen Fieldhouse. The victory was KU’s sixth straight, improving its record to 12-2 on the year while <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Rhode Island drops to 7-7.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Wright scored 19 second-half points and finished 10-for-14 from the field with a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomores Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers chipped in 19 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman Sherron Collins also scored in double-figures with 13.

KU’s defense held the Rams to 37 percent shooting from the field, including just 21 percent in the first half. Freshman Darrell Arthur recorded four of the Jayhawks 10 blocks on the night.

Kansas committed a season-low nine turnovers. Junior Will Daniels led Rhode Island with 21 points and eight boards.

The Jayhawks will be off until Jan. 7 when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to face the South Carolina Gamecocks. Tip-off at the Colonial Center is set for 3:30 p.m. central time and will air on CBS.
