LAWRENCE, Kan. – More than 500 boys and girls spent Saturday afternoon with their basketball heroes as Kansas men’s basketball hosted its annual Holiday Clinic. The beyond capacity attendance had campers rotating in Allen Fieldhouse, the KU basketball practice gym and Horejsi Family Athletic Center during the two-and-a-half hour clinic.

“It’s a fun day that our players look forward to working,” said 11th-year KU head coach Bill Self. “They started this long before I got here and we’ve continued it. It’s fun for our players and staff and it’s a great way to give back.”

Participants ranged from boys and girls ages first through sixth grade. The majority of the basketball goals were lowered for the younger Jayhawks who were active in drills such as shooting, dribbling and defensive maneuvers. The current Jayhawks and staff served as the counselors with other activities including question and answer sessions and many other hoops games with the clinicians and their heroes. The afternoon ended with an autograph session.

“I’ve always enjoyed being around kids,” KU junior Naadir Tharpe said. “The chance to be around kids and show them something I learned is a good thing.”

Kansas (8-3) closes out the 2013 calendar year when it hosts Toledo (12-0) on Monday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. (Central) in Allen Fieldhouse.
