Lawson claims third Big 12 Player of the Week honor
IRVING, Texas – After two more double-doubles and his first 30-point outing in a Kansas uniform, redshirt-junior forward Dedric Lawson as named the Big 12’s Player of the Week it was announced by the league office Wednesday. Lawson, the conference’s leader in scoring and rebounding, earned his fifth weekly award of the season and the third player of the week honor.
Lawson posted back-to-back double-doubles with 16 points and 14 rebounds in a home win against South Dakota and a season-high 30 points with 14 rebounds at No. 18 Arizona State. He has four double-doubles in his last four games and a Big 12-leading eight for the season.
This is the third time in 2018-19, Lawson has earned the player of the week honor and his fifth conference weekly award this season. The Memphis, Tennessee, forward was Big 12 Player of the Week Nov. 12, 26 and now Dec. 27, while also securing Newcomer of the Week accolades on Dec. 2 and Dec. 17
In addition to the leading the Big 12 in double-doubles, Lawson also leads the conference in scoring at 20.1 points per game and rebounding at 10.8 boards per contest. He is the only player in the Big 12 currently averaging a double-double and one of four players in NCAA Division I averaging 20-plus points and 10-plus rebounds.
After the short holiday break, Kansas will return to Allen Fieldhouse to host Eastern Michigan on Dec. 29, to close out the calendar year. Tip-off against the Eagles is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
