Kansas earns both Big 12 Swimmer and Diver of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Big 12 Conference announced Wednesday afternoon that Kansas sophomore Manon Manning and senior Vicky Xu earned the league’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors.

Xu broke two diving records last Saturday (Feb. 2) at Arkansas, taking down the defending national champion (Brooke Shultz) in the process. Xu broke the Kansas school record – for the second time this season – and the Arkansas pool record in the three-meter dive to finish first with a score of 398.63. That performance came after landing in second place in the one-meter board with a mark of 310.73.

Xu has now broke the Kansas record in the three-meter event in each meet she has dove – a record that hadn’t been broken in 10 years prior to her debut at Northern Arizona on January 11.

Manning earned her nod after she swam in three of the five first-place finishes the Jayhawks accumulated against the Razorbacks, where she also clocked a lifetime-best time. Manning touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke with a new personal-best time of 53.70. She followed up with a 1:58.32 finish in the 200-yard backstroke for another first-place spot and the second-best time of her career. Manning contributed to the winning 400-yard freestyle relay with a team-finish of 3:24.95 and rounded out with a silver in the 200-yard medley relay with a final time of 1:42.98.

“As a team we are all very happy for both Manon and Vicky, and how they preformed,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “Everyone had a solid meet at Arkansas across the board and Vicky and Manon really stood out. So we are happy for them and it is a sign of good things to come as we finish the dual meet season and head into the Big 12 Championship.”
