KU Cruises Past Red Raiders, 86-52

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The University of Kansas men’s basketball team (14-6, 5-2 Big 12) defeated Texas Tech (11-10, 3-4 Big 12), 86-52, Monday night at Allen Fieldhouse. The victory extended the Jayhawks’ winning streak to four games and improved their record to 16-2 all-time against the Red Raiders.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Freshman guard Brandon Rush led all scorers with 24 points, which tied a season high, and also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. The effort marked his second consecutive double-double and third of the season.

Sophomore forwards Darnell Jackson and Sasha Kaun each chipped in 10 points for the Jayhawks. Jackson provided a spark off the bench, recording eight rebounds and three electrifying dunks while Kaun snagged seven boards and recorded two blocks. Kansas out-rebounded Texas Tech 55-28 and outscored the Red Raiders 52-28 in the paint.

Freshman guard Mario Chalmers, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week, dished out a game-high seven assists to go along with his eight points. Sophomore guard Russell Robinson contributed six more dimes as the Jayhawks finished with 21 helpers.

Kansas never trailed in the game and led by as many as 35 with 7:02 remaining in the first half. Kansas’ defense continually clamped down on Texas Tech, limiting the Red Raiders to 34.5 percent shooting from the field. KU scored 21 fast break points and notched 22 second-chance points. The Jayhawks also forced 12 Red Raider turnovers, which they converted into 21 points.

Kansas returns to action Sunday, Oct. 5, to take on Oklahoma at Allen Fieldhouse. Tip off is scheduled for noon.
