Ulane named to Stopper of the Year Watch List
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) named Kansas redshirt-sophomore right-handed closer Jonah Ulane to the 2019 Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List, as announced by the association Wednesday.
In its 15th year, the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award is given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. A total of 45 names appear on the midseason watch list, with two hailing from the Big 12 Conference (Oklahoma junior Jason Ruffcorn).
“I’m thrilled for Jonah to receive some well-deserved recognition like that,” head coach Ritch Price said. “He came here as an academic scholarship guy and he continued to work hard. I can’t say enough good things about Jonah.”
Ulane is second in the conference in saves with eight behind Oklahoma’s Ruffcorn who has 10. In 19 and 2/3 innings pitched, he has struck out 29 and walked seven. In early March, Ulane was put on scholarship by coach Price for his performance.
“He would be the most popular guy on our team,” said Price. “He pitches on heart and he pitches on guts. Every time we give him that ball he finds a way to get us out of trouble.”
Ulane and the rest of the Jayhawks take a break from conference play and host Creighton on Wednesday, April 24 before opening a three-game series on the road at Furman on Friday, April 26.
