2003 (Junior): Carried a record of 2-5 in 20 appearances… Started a total of 10 games… Became part of the starting rotation midway through the Big 12 schedule, making his first-ever conference start against Nebraska on April 5… Picked up three saves and sported an ERA of 4.35… Worked a total of 72.1 innings…

2002 (Sophomore):Led all pitchers with 22 appearances… Finished the season with a 1-3 record and 5.85 earned run average… Allowed 49 base hits and struck out 21 batters in 40.0 innings of action… Only start of the season came against Texas-Pan American in which he worked a season-high five innings… Best outing of the season was against Texas (4/6) as he allowed just two base hits and no runs in 4.0 innings out of the bullpen… Earned his first career win, a 6-5 decision vs. Nebraska-Omaha (4/10).

2001 (Freshman):Had 10 appearances including two starting assignments… Finished his rookie campaign with a 6.06 earned run average… Made his first career start but did not receive a decision against Newman on April 25… Appeared in the same game with older brother, Pete, on March 24 vs. Baylor… Tossed a perfect inning vs. Big 12 rival Oklahoma State on March 4.

High School:A 2000 graduate of Westside High School… Worked his way to a perfect 7-0 record and a 1.15 ERA as a senior… Led the team to the state championship while earning All-State recognition from the Omaha World-Herald and the Lincoln Journal-Star… Lettered in baseball and basketball… Coached by Bob Greco.

Personal:Born December 2, 1981… Parents are Dennis and Denise Smart… Older brother, Pete, was a standout pitcher for the Jayhawks from 1998-01.
